Origin is one of the few factors in a sapphire's grading report that can move its value independent of carat, clarity, or cut. Kashmir and Sri Lanka (Ceylon) are two of the most historically significant sources, and confusing one for the other is a common — and costly — mistake for a first-time buyer.

Kashmir sapphires, mined from a single remote deposit largely exhausted by the early 20th century, are prized for a distinctive "velvety" blue caused by fine silk inclusions that scatter light without clouding it. Genuine Kashmir origin, verified by a recognized lab, commands a significant premium — and is rare enough that most buyers will never encounter one outside a major auction house.

Ceylon sapphires cover a far wider color range — from cornflower blue to the padparadscha's signature pink-orange — and remain in active production today. They are generally more available and more affordably priced than Kashmir material, without sacrificing brilliance or durability.

Origin claims should always be backed by a lab report from a recognized gemological laboratory, not a seller's description alone. Ask specifically which lab issued the origin determination, and whether the report addresses treatment as well as origin — the two are disclosed separately, and both affect value.
