At 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale it is softer than most gemstones, so it is best suited to display or carefully worn pieces. Some scapolite also fluoresces strongly under ultraviolet light, a property that makes it a favourite with mineral collectors.
These specimens show violet-purple crystals still attached to their original host rock, the way they formed.
