Room VIII · Collection
Nephrite is one of the two minerals sold as jade, alongside jadeite. Its tightly interlocking fibrous structure makes it one of the toughest natural materials, far more resistant to chipping and breaking than its hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale suggests.
Nephrite SpecimenNephrite Jade · Extra-Large Cabinet · $5,000Rs 1,383,300Tougher than it looks
That toughness is why nephrite has been carved for thousands of years, from ancient Chinese ritual objects to the pounamu of New Zealand's Māori. Its greens come from iron, ranging from pale celadon to deep spinach green.
Nephrite rewards being handled: carvings and specimens take on a soft, waxy polish over time.
