Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one colour: green, caused by the iron in its structure, from yellowish lime to deep olive.

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it suits earrings and pendants well, and it is the birthstone for August. Peridot is almost never treated.
Where it comes from
Pakistan's Sapat Valley, in Kohistan, produces some of the largest clean peridot in the world, often recognisable by fine needle-like inclusions of the mineral ludwigite. Other important sources include Arizona, Myanmar and China.
