Room II · Collection
Garnet is a family of closely related silicate minerals rather than a single stone, which is why it occurs in almost every colour: the reds of pyrope and almandine, the oranges of spessartine, the greens of grossular and demantoid.
Umba Light Garnet1.815 ct · Oval Brilliant · Umba Valley, Tanzania · $120Rs 33,200A family, not a single stone
Most garnet is untreated, and at 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it wears well in jewellery. It is also the traditional birthstone for January.
The pieces in this collection come from Tanzania's Umba Valley, a source known for an unusually wide range of garnet colours, including the pinkish-orange to peach tones of Malaya garnet and stones that change colour between daylight and indoor light.
